Portal
a) Genre
Portal is a Sci-Fi, and Puzzle game. It's known for being quite a hard game once you get further in. It can also be quite psychologically thrilling at points throughout the game or if you look further into the meaning of parts of the game.
b)Target Audience
Portal is rated T for teen, so it's aimed at ages around 12 or 13 and above. There are occasional psychological scenes and the game can be quite difficult.
c) Narrative/Storyline
You play as a female protagonist called Chelle and carry out different tests in test chambers. You're in a facility owned by Aperture Science run by a robot called GLaDOS. She tasks you to complete rooms using a portal gun you find at the start of the game. You find out that GLaDOS actually planned to kill you, but you have an opportunity to scape and fight GLaDOS.
d) Characters
You play as Chelle who is the protagonist. The main antagonist is called GLaDOS who is a robot who controls the facility you're in. There are also Turrets with their own feelings and minds who shot you on sight. Chelle is in her 20s and is trapped in aperture science's facility. She tries to escape from it. GLaDOS is a robot created by humans but became aware of what she was, and killed the humans who created her. After this, she went mad, trying to stick to her original programming, but also wanting to kill.
e) Gameplay
You have a portal gun and no fall damage boots. There are certain spaces where you can shoot the gun and it will open an oval shaped orange or blue portal. You then fire the other colour at a different surface and you travel through to the other portal. You can only put portals on portal surfaces. You can't take fall damage or die by falling a long way thanks to the boots you wear which are given to you at the start of the game. You can pick up certain objects and interact with other operational things like buttons and pressure plates. You go from room to room, solving different puzzles using the portal gun. There are enemies such as turrets who shot at you on sight and lasers that hurt you when you step into them. You have to complete certain things to move onto the next room. Any objects you pick up and any portals you place will be removed from finishing a level.
f) Platforms
Portal was first released as part of The Orange Box on PC and Xbox 360 on October the 10th, 2007 and for the PlayStation 3 on the 11th of December 2007. Portal was also sold separately on Steam as it's own game. When the platform Steam was brought to Mac, Portal was also available on Mac OS.
g) Personal recommendation of a reviewer
I personally really enjoyed Portal. It had a very clever and interesting story that always tricked me and kept me interested. The ending is quite satisfying and has a good twist. I would happily play it again and would recommend it to others. A lot of levels were challenging but I managed to work through it, and the challenge wasn't annoying but felt good. Some levels are difficult but have fun mechanics like building momentum to fly through the air. Overall, it's a fun and equally challenging and interesting game, I would rate it 8/10. The graphics, for its age, are very well done and I would give a 7/10. The Story is clever and the characters are very lovable and play big roles, so I'd give the story 9/10. The game mechanics are easy to understand and are fun to use, so i'd give it 8/10.
